Welcome
Welcome to my rides website. I have designed this website to give bike riders a general idea of ride routes and the terrain description of places to ride in the Reno vicinity, Northern Nevada, the Sierra and Lake Tahoe areas. These routes are posted as I have ridden them. By no means do they have to be done the same way that I have. The local Reno rides are provided so that you can pick up the routes where they are convenient for you and can be added into your rides if you choose. Start and ending points for the rides outside the local Reno area are normal ones and are used by riders when completing these rides. Where you start and finish is entirely up to you.
I have been riding bicycles regularly since the mid 1990s when my wife and I started out on hybrids. Gradually we were able to climb some of the hills around our home (we did a lot of walking too). I worked my way up to a road bike and found that I liked to ride very much. Over the last 9 years I have averaged between five thousand and seven thousand miles per year on a bike. This includes a road bike and a road tandem on which I ride with my wife. I do not race and have no desire to do so. I do however like long rides. I routinely ride from Reno to Virginia City to Carson City (70 miles round trip) from spring to fall. I also ride in the winter, weather permitting. I have ridden all the passes of the Death Ride but have not completed the actual event. I have done as much as 14 thousand feet of climbing in one day (but it takes all day). There are still plenty of mountains I have yet to climb in the Sierras. I am planning on conquering some of those peaks later this summer. I will keep you posted.
Some of these rides may be too easy or difficult for you depending upon your fitness, ability and desire. These are strictly individual things and I only encourage you to attempt what you feel you can accomplish. Some of the longer rides do not make it easy to quit because getting back to the car may be just as difficult as coming to where you are. Enough of the mountains outside Reno, let us get back to the rides within town. The routes I have listed in this site are major routes traveled by many cyclists. These rides can be done themselves or as part of another ride depending on your desire and fitness. One very nice thing about Reno is that you can do as much or as little climbing in a particular ride as you would like. Take riding to Verdi for example. With small variations in this route you can climb a few hundred feet during the course of traveling to Verdi and back or you can make the ride with three to five thousand feet just by changing the route slightly. This provides interesting and diverse training without having to drive anywhere. Check out the terrain where you are and plan your route for your workout. If you have any questions for me or suggestions for routes or improvements to the website please feel free to contact me using this link. My e-mail address. Riding in Reno is great. There is plenty of beautiful scenery to take in and challenging routes to tax your heart and mind. Take care and enjoy the ride.
