Kingsbury Grade-Luther Pass-Woodfords
This ride usually begins and ends at the same place as the Kingsbury grade ride and covers the same climb to Daggett Summit (see the Kingsbury page for description and map). Once you reach the summit head down to Lake Tahoe using caution as this road is not in the best condition. Once in Stateline, Nevada head south (left turn). At this point you can proceed through South Lake Tahoe till you get to US 50 at the Y and turn left and head for Myers. A better way with less traffic and a much nicer road is to go south to the Pioneer Trail. This cut off is not too far down the road and bears to the left. Once on Pioneer Trail follow it till it ends on US 50 and take a left. You miss all the congestion of South Lake Tahoe and still have plenty of great scenery along the way. The two routes are now one so proceed to Myers till you see the sign for CA 89 south. This is your road to head up Luther Pass. This will be a long and gradual climb which is not as steep as some of the mountains in this area. It will be a long grind however of constant climbing all the way to the summit at 7,740 feet. Then a rapid descent back down to connect to CA 88. If you take a right here you can proceed to Carson Pass (of Death Ride fame) or turn left and head toward the Woodfords. Be aware that this road has more car and truck traffic on it and can be a little nerve racking on the descent to the Woodfords so use caution and have patience. After a fast descent to the Woodfords you can stop at the general store for food and a cold drink. About a half mile down 88 you get to Carson River Road. Take a right. Follow this road till you get to Foothill road, turn left, cross back over 88 and head up back to Nevada. Once you cross the state line the road becomes Fredericksburg road. Follow this till it dead ends into route 206 (Fairview road) and turn left. Route 206 will take you back to the starting point at the foot of Kingsbury Grade. The last miles from the Woodfords are flat with some gentle rolling hills so relax and enjoy the ride home. You have earned it.
