Geiger Grade

Geiger Grade is a 7 mile climb from Reno to a plateau about 3 miles north of Virginia City, NV. This ride is commonly used by local riders to gauge their fitness and is easy to time. The earliest part of the climb is steep sometimes reaching 9-10%. The second third of the climb is not as steep at 5-6% grade. The last segment after a flat area is again at 9-10% grade to the finish and can be tough when you are tired. Just start at the 7-11 on Highway 341 at the beginning of the climb. The climb will end at the Geiger summit (6,200 feet). This ride can take fast riders as little as 30-35 minutes or for those of us who are slower it can take as much as an hour or more. From the Summit it is an easy 3 mile ride to Virginia City where you can stop and refresh yourself then climb back to the summit and glide down the 7 mile descent back to south Reno.

Keys to the Ride

1. Start timing at 7-11 on Highway 341
2. The first 1/3 of the climb is tough.
3. The middle third is easier until you hit the flat
4. The last 2 miles to the summit are the toughest so don't let up at the flat. Grind it out until you reach the top.
